Jim Worthington, the longtime owner of the Newtown Athletic Club (NAC) has recently accepted two new positions to add to his many responsibilities at the helm of one of the largest privately-owned health clubs in the world.
The first of his new positions, as of July 1, 2018, is Chairman of the Board of IHRSA (International Health Racquet and Sportsclub Association, the largest fitness association in the world – representing 80 countries and 200 members internationally).
The second of his new positions is his recent appointment to the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness and Nutrition where Mr. Worthington will be serving under the chairmanship of Herschel Walker along with other luminaries such as Johnny Damon, Mariano Rivera and Misty May-Treanor. The president’s charge for the new council is to increase youth participation in sports and physical activity (which has decreased from 45% to 37% over the past few years) as well as to create incentives for all Americans to get moving and maintain activity for the duration of their lifetime, thereby decreasing the healthcare burden on this country.
Given the importance of these two new positions, Jim is arguably the leading industry voice positioned to affect change as it pertains to the obesity and healthcare crisis worldwide.
Jim Worthington as the owner, visionary and soul of the Newtown Athletic Club, one of the largest privately-owned health clubs in the world serving for 40 years 13,000 members and the entire community with programs for fitness, sports, recreation, sociability, education and community involvement with charity, has been preparing his entire life to fulfill the roles now bestowed upon him by IHRSA and the president.
In addition to all of this, Jim founded the NAC Have a Heart Foundation which has supported countless charities and thousands of people annually as well as being instrumental in the passage of the federal “Right to Try” legislation which could prolong or even save the lives of terminally ill Americans. Through the foundation, Jim has raised over 2 million dollars for ALS Research receiving the Augie’s Bash National Leadership award for his generosity and dedication.
His vision is and always has been to afford all individuals – no matter their demographics or physical abilities – the opportunity to be healthy and well through wise lifestyle choices. Now he will be able to provide a clear voice for the importance of fitness in the lives of all Americans for the betterment of not only each individual but for the whole country as it relates to quality of life and the economy.
